How to Tie a Tie (Four in Hand Knot)

By

Like a lot of women out there I have a man who still relies on me to tie his ties for him. But this isn't for them; this is for the men who haven't yet learned or the women who want to learn for their (and their man's) own benefit.

The Four in Hand Knot is simplest of the tie knots (And the first I learned). This knot is best for your standard button down dress/work shirt; and best to use a heavy fabric tie with this knot. An extra benefit to this knot is it gives the neck a slightly elongated look, though the knot will still work with those who have longer necks.

To tie this knot, select a necktie of your choice and stand in front of the mirror or your man. Then just follow these steps and visuals:

1. Start with the wide end (W) on the right, and extend that roughly 12 inches below the skinny end (N), which will be on the left.

2. Then cross the wide end over the skinny end.

3. Bring the wide end underneath the skinny end.

4. Continue the loop and bring the wide end over the skinny end again.

5. Then pull the wide end up through the loop that is around your neck.

6. Hold the front end of the knot, loosely, and bring the wide end down through the loop.

7. Finally, remove your finger and carefully tighten the knot to the collar by holding the skinny end and sliding the knot upwards.

And that's all there is to it. Now that wasn't so hard was it? Just remember to keep on practicing because, practice makes perfect!
